Cilice, 2024

Steel, linear actuator, ribbon.

In Cilice (2024), I draw upon the powerful symbolism of the spiked cilice chain, which has historically been used as a tool for penance in Catholic traditions. By creating a larger version of this chain, I effectively diminish its oppressive power and erase its secretive nature. This artwork incorporates a linear actuator, a mechanical device that mimics the movement of the cilice against the flesh. As the eight-foot chain moves against a steel surface, it produces a scratching noise, giving a voice to the silenced oppressed peoples that it represents.
